King Solomon
King Solomon was a wise man, but also a foolish one. He disobeyed God many times. King Solomon was the second son of David. Solomon was loved by many.
David, before his death, made Solomon co-regent so Solomon could become king. God appeared in Solomon’s dream and promised to grant him what he wanted as king. Solomon told God that he wanted wisdom to rule his people well. God gave him wisdom. He also gave him power and great riches.
Solomon was a great writer, poet, and scientist. He also turned Israel into a show place of the middle-East. Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines, this angered God. Solomon’s wives turned him away from God, and he began to worship idols. God was angry and took the kingdom away from Solomon and gave it to one of his servants. For the sake of Solomon’s father, David, the Lord did not do this during Solomon’s lifetime. God, instead, took the kingdom from Solomon’s son.
Solomon knew he went against God and disobeyed him. Solomon wrote three books in the Bible, Proverbs, Song of Solomon, and Ecclesiastes. These books show Solomon’s remorse at disobeying God. He understood that his desire to please only himself did not lead to happiness. In the end, he learned what he wrote in Ecclesiastes,” Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.”
